We went as a party of six to the Barley Mow on Sunday 31st March 2008. Having been told by phone we could not make a reservation we arrived just before 12.30 to make sure of a table. this we managed about 12.40. Thought we'd start with some drinks, only to discover that two of the guest beers were alrady 'off' (not a good start - a pub without beer). Next we were told 'No Roast Beef'(at just gone 12.30 pm!). Only 2 bar staff - they were trying to serve drinks, take orders and juggle with people paying their bills. At least 15 people were waiting to be served at anyone time! Eventaully placed order at 1 pm. Then we waited and waited. Eventually after 50 minutes we went and asked if we were going to get some lunch? Apologies, short staffed. Lunch arrived at 2.30. unfortunately two of the meals were wrong! Catch- up meals arrived at about 2.50. Sadly, again they were not what was on the menu instead of Wellington stuffed with cauliflower and potatoe puree they were literally stuffed with cabbage (which had been served with the roast dinners). Oh well to exhausted to complain (cold cabbage covered with pastry is just horrible). It was then we discovered that the barman who had served us at the bar, ad been switched to the kitchen and was now the chef! Then puddings, waited and waited, went twice to the bar for service. By the time the waitress arrived we had lost the will to live, so said we we wouldn't bother but would just have coffee. A further 3 visits to the bar was required, to remind them we were still waiting, before coffee arrived at 3.30. Summoned the manager only to be told he was new and wasn't in anyway. Complained about the service and was told well that what it is like most Sundays but if, in future, we made sure we arrived after 3.30 pm it would be a lot quieter. We mentionend that we chosen lunch time because that's what we wanted 'lunch'. Eventually, (3 hrs and 15 mins later) we left at 3.45. We would never, ever go back again and would suggest you think seriously before you go! Unless of course you would like to eat late in the afternoon or have a meal before you go so you won't die of starvation before you eat!

Went to the barley mow this evening as a group of 4 firstly the barman was very obnoxious. Then food was not good to say the least, uncooked lamb starters, over cooked chips and rubberised steak & mushrooms and i think it was supposed to be surf and turf not a nice experience at all. Must give the waitrees credit though very good service shame about the rest.!!!!!! Wished we had stayed at home will not be back

Hadn't been in the Barley since its pre-smoking ban redecoration and tidy-up. Went in on May 31st for a meal (evening)and was probably one of the nicest meals we had had for a few years... very pleased to see Whitebait back as a starter and the tomato and garlic filled Sea Bass was fantastic. Surf and turf off the Chef's special board was very good with an excellent garlic/oil sauce that the Crevettes had been cooked in, the Steak had a flash name but forgot it... was very, very good..........
