The ABingdon Innefficient Traffic System
----------------------------------------
· reduce the reliance on motorised traffic in general
Not everyone lives in walking or even cycling distance of town, I pay road tax, why shouldnt I be able to use my car.
· remove all but essential traffic from the town centre
What halfwit in their right mind decides to drive into Abingdon town centre if its not essential to go there?!
· promote the use of public transport for journeys both within the town and to other destinations
Even if in my village there actually was bus which turned up once in a while, what would convince me to get on an unairconditioned hot , dirty, smelly tin can full of screaming children and verbally dieritic teenage girls playing "music" on their phones??? More to the point, why would I want to make a 10 minute journey in 20 minutes?
· promote safer, more pleasant and more convenient conditions for pedestrians and cyclists
Firstly, lets use Cowley Road as an example. This street is a 20 limit and semi pedestianised with lots of pretty colours on the roads and paths, and what do we have? Complete complaceny of pedestrians. Cowley Road is a free for all where it is perfectly socially acceptable to wander out in front of any car and assume it will stop, and by god if you are driving and you don't see the parasites expect to be hauled before the local magistrates court. Let me assure anyone reading this that when the 20 limit comes to Abingdon, traffic allowing, I will endevour to at drive at at least 40 through the town centre at every opportunity.
As for cyclists convenience, lets talk about Audlett Drive. A nice wide 40(ish) limit designed for traffic to pass efficiently round the outskirts of town. Also on this nice efficient road is a nice efficient cycle path. So why and I forever braking for and weaving around smarmy cyclists causing unnecessary obstruction?!! And yes, I know cyclist are legally entitled to cycle on the road, but to use the road when there is a perfectly good cycle path (which I have used on many occasions is an antisocial act! Many cyclists in Abingdon clearly have no regard for my convenience and safety as a driver.
· improve accessibility to facilities, particularly for non-car users and those whose mobility is impaired
And this is achieved by halfing road capactity???
· promote road safety and reduce the number and severity of road casualities
See rant about Cowley Road. Also, I have heard of no serious accidents in Abingdon town centre in the whole time I have lived in this area (all my life)
· promote, and where appropriate, establish the efficient management and operation of all types of traffic and related activity, including parking
HAHAHAHAHA! Efficient, Britain? No such thing.
· promote community safety and reduce crime and fear of crime
Well that is achieved by putting police on the streets to remove the chav scum that cause the crime, not by creating traffic jams.
· reduce airborne pollution (taking account of the UK National Air Quality Strategy) and noise levels throughout the town in general, and in areas of high incidence in particular
Its a town!!! Not Piddleton-on-the-Wold.
· preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the town's Conservation Areas, its stock of listed buildings and particularly the historic centre
Again, how will traffic jams solve this ?
· improve accessibility between Abingdon and the surrounding countryside for recreational purposes
Accessibility was fine before all this started!
· sustain and enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre as an attractive place for shopping, business, leisure and tourism
Well some shops worth visiting should help.
· protect and enhance the town's sound economic and employment base
How will traffic jams achieve this!!!
· take account of public opinion and gain widespread public support for any proposals through effective publicity, information, consultation and education
What public opinion, have they spoken to drivers?
